Airway Focused Orthodontics, Sleep Apnea Treatment, & Early Growth Guidance

A clean and properly aligned airway makes it easy to breathe and also minimizes the chances of tooth decay. Early airway focused dentistry can help patients prevent some serious conditions like allergies, asthma and an open mouth posture also contribute to incorrect jaw development. This treatment focuses on nasal breathing and promotes jaw structure improvement and dental development naturally.

Expanders and Growth Guidance Appliances

An orthodontic expander works best by widening the upper jaw and create a better airway. Specially on children because the two bones of the palate are not fused together yet like they are for adults. This means they can be adjusted and expanded easier and more comfortably.

Removeable Schwartz 3-way expander

The Schwartz appliance is an orthodontic tool which helps children with a variety of dental issues. This device focuses on solving a number of jaw and teeth problems, such as crowding, narrow jaw, underbite, and restricted airway. The Schwartz appliance is a removable device which targets either the mandible or maxilla and treats related crossbite and crowding issues.

The Schwartz expander fits in the roof of your mouth. It is made of acrylic and metal. The purpose of the Schwartz expander is to increase the width of the upper jaw and forward growth. This is done by turning the screw that is in the center of the appliance. You will do this for a period of time directed by the Doctor. You will take the expander out of your mouth to turn the screw.

Hyrax Fixed Expander

Also know as RPE (Rapid Palatal Expander). It works by widening the bone in the upper arch. At an early age we can separate the mid-palatal suture in the upper arch allowing the palate to widen and create more room for the adult teeth or widen the smile to better fit with the lower teeth. Is typically used to widen the arch and open the airway. Our Hyrax has welded lingual wires expanding to the premolars or cuspids. It is constructed entirely of biomedical stainless steel, and the housing is completely smooth with no rough areas to aid in hygiene. With each expansion appliance, we provide a custom swivel key that has an integrated activation recording tool directly on the handle.

Biobloc

The Biobloc is a removable appliance which widens the upper jaw. The front teeth are moved forwards and upwards by the wires while the expansion screw widens the back teeth. The purpose of widening the upper jaw is to gain more space for the tongue and the teeth. Initially, the upper front teeth may look like they are becoming more prominent but this is normal. Some spacing may also occur, though these spaces will be closed at a later stage.

Lower Williams Expander

The Williams Expander is used for lower expansion. Tubes are laser welded on the lingual bars to accommodate a wire which is used to round out the anterior during expansion.
